Being There

The U.S. Alliance has workers in about 70 countries. This may or may not impress you—and that’s okay. Because it’s not about being in as many places as we can. It’s about being where we’re supposed to be.

After more than three decades of fruitful ministry in Colombia, Alliance workers Doug and Naomi Ord could have retired from international ministry and settled back in the States for a more relaxed pace of life. But when God gave them a glimpse of a new work He was doing in Italy, they knew that this is where they are supposed to be.

A couple in a creative-access communist nation was accused of being “brainwashed”, because an official at the college where they were applying for work just couldn’t fathom why they would leave the comforts of the West and accept meager wages just to help others in Jesus’ name. This reaction made it even clearer to the couple that this is where they are supposed to be.

In the midst of the Syrian civil war, ISIS advance and Ebola outbreak, Alliance workers and national churches have faced the daily risks of caring for some of the world’s neediest people. Well before—sometimes even decades before—these catastrophic events unfolded, God had placed these workers and churches right where they were supposed to be for such a time as this.

And who would know better than the couple who allowed God to uproot them multiple times—to six countries on two continents—trusting each time that He was placing them exactly where they were supposed to be. “There is fear of the unknown,” they admitted, “but at the same time, there is a calm assurance in the God who has called us. We know that He will go with us and equip us.”

It’s a wonderful privilege to read stories of God’s abiding faithfulness among those who are risking much to see His purposes fulfilled. But, as I’m sure all of these workers would admit, there’s nothing like being there. And we’re sure glad they are.
