Board Summary Letter

Dear Co-laborer for Christ,

The Board of Directors of The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) met June 27–28, 2018. The following summarizes the Board proceedings to the extent allowed by the duty of confidentiality owed on various issues.

The Board’s Retirement Center Review Committee met with the directors of the Alliance Retirement communities the day before the Board meeting began to review the performance of their respective ministries, discuss areas of opportunity/challenges, and pray for the leaders.

The Board meeting started on Wednesday morning with a devotional time led by Matthew Kelly in which he reflected on the foundational importance of an intimate and devoted relationship with Jesus in everything we do to advance His Kingdom. On Thursday morning, an international worker used Ezekiel 47:1–12 to reflect on God’s action as the ultimate reality of life.

President John P. Stumbo then presented his report to the Board focusing on his interaction with many districts, congregations, and members as well as attendance at district conferences and SEEK events. The recurring theme of his report was the need to increase engagement in the Alliance mission, emphasize cooperation and joint efforts, and address challenges in a constructive, non-divisive way that keeps us focused on advancing the Kingdom.

Dennis K. Whalen, vice president for Development, shared with the Board the call he and his wife, Patty, received to join the pastoral team at the Evangelical Church of Bangkok (ECB) in Thailand. The Board celebrated Dennis’s 11-year ministry in a role where he leaves a healthy and productive office of ministry. The Board prayed for Dennis and Patty as they follow God’s lead.

There was much discussion on the impact that same-sex marriage will have on C&MA higher education and retirement community ministries. Our retirement communities have already received indications that their refusal to admit same-sex married couples will lead to litigation. This is an unsettled area of law that will require much discernment and coordination with subsidiary and affiliated entities.

Scott G. Slocum updated the Board on Nyack’s operations, finances, and projections going forward. There was much discussion of many issues.

The Board received reports from its committees:

Development: The Board expressed its gratitude to Dennis Whalen for his many years of great service as vice president for Development.

Operations and Finance: The Board will present a bylaw amendment at Council which would allow the National Office to make annual budget revisions up to 2 percent.

Church Ministries: A revised Women in Ministry statement to replace the statement currently on the C&MA’s Web page was discussed and modified. The statement did not change any substantive policy, but it more comprehensively expresses existing policy and practices.

International Ministries: The Board approved the appointment of three couples and two individuals as international workers for service with the C&MA to four locations. Much appreciation was expressed for their availability and willingness to serve. As is its practice, different Board members prayed individually for each appointment.

Executive Committee: In response to the current legal and cultural challenges to our religious liberty, the Board adopted an updated and more user-friendly version of its Policy Regarding the Faith Community and Mission of The Christian and Missionary Alliance, now entitled Christian Community Policy of The Christian and Missionary Alliance. This version builds on what we have learned over the last few years, the most recent court decisions, and the experience we’ve gained in application.

The meeting ended with a time of prayer.

In Christ’s love,

Steven C. Lausell

Corporate Secretary
