The Tozer Anthology

As reported in the Sept/Oct 2016 issue.

Compiled by Harry Verploegh

It is declared in the Bible, as well as being often assumed, that man has a conscious and living soul.

Our Lord Jesus Christ in His teachings took it for granted that men and women know they have souls. You cannot find a passage anywhere in the New Testament where Jesus said, in so many words: “Verily, I say unto you, man has a soul.” He did not need to say it.

If you take away the truth that a man has a soul, you devaluate the man. You reduce him to something less than a man, for God in creation breathed the breath of life into man, and he became a living soul.

The eternal worth of the soul needs again to be declared as having worth over all other human values. There is nothing else that can be compared with the human soul.

The belief in the fact of the human soul is a test of our humanity.

When Jesus spoke of the soul in His time, He was speaking about that part of man’s being that is endless, that lives on and on. He certainly was not speaking of the physical body in which man lives.
