Alliance Worker Recovering from Van Accident

Alliance international worker David Manfred is recovering from injuries he suffered in a taxi van accident in Cambodia last month.

About an hour into the 10-hour trip to Phnom Penh, the van began to fishtail after a tire blew out. Then the vehicle rolled, landing upright.

“I remember praying quickly as I felt the van start to roll, ‘Jesus, save us!’” David said.

Noting that none of the 15 passengers was killed, two of the people on board told David, “We were lucky.” He responded, “I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and I prayed that He would save us—and He did.”

There was no ambulance service in the remote area where the accident took place. Joyce Johns, an Alliance worker who is a nurse, met David near the crash location and took him to the provincial hospital in Stung Treng. He was released into his family’s care, but a CT scan later revealed six broken ribs, a broken collar bone, bruising of the lung, and a pneumothorax (air in the chest cavity from a hole in the lung).

At the cardiac hospital in Phnom Penh, an X-ray revealed the pneumothorax was gone. A decision was made to life flight David to Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok, where additional X-rays confirmed no hole in the lung. He underwent surgery on September 19, one week after the accident.

“I have been told to take it slow for the next few weeks,” David noted. “Each day, I feel less pain, greater mobility, and more stamina. We would humbly ask the Lord to bring complete healing—and I am well on the way. Thanks for your ongoing prayers.”
