Initial Report on Hurricane Irma

Puerto Rico faces major blackouts, but dodges catastrophic damage.

From Rev. Javier Gómez, superintendent of the C&MA Puerto Rico District:

As you all might know, last night we were partially spared from getting the full force of Hurricane Irma. We are grateful to God!

Nevertheless, 70 percent of PR is in blackout, and cell phones and Internet connections are not working well. So we have not been able to contact many pastors. We are especially concerned about the Vieques and Culebra churches and the rest of the east coast, as they were affected much more than the rest of the island. Water service is also in short supply. All in all, Puerto Rico once more has good reason to be thankful.

We will continue to send updates as we make contact with our pastors. We thank the greater Alliance family for its prayers and encouragement.

As yet, the C&MA National Office in Colorado Springs has received no word on the impact of Hurricane Irma elsewhere in the Caribbean. In their most recent newsletter, Zac and Julie Stutler, Alliance international workers in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, write,

Please pray for the Dominican Republic and the islands of the Caribbean as we are in the path of Hurricane Irma. We are watching the reports and are preparing personally and in the church for the possible impact of this storm on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. It is still early to predict, but it looks to be quite a storm. We know that God is in control, and we are trusting Him.
