Advent Blessings in the City of Lights

The freedom to question faith opens door to a seeker accepting Christ in post-Christian Paris.

Adapted from an update by Dr. Alan Clason, serving with The Alliance at Trinity International Church of Paris

Little more than one half of 1 percent of France’s population professes to be evangelical.  Progress has at times seemed painfully slow in this post-Christian nation, yet there is a new openness to the gospel in recent years.

During this Advent season, we are grateful for God’s light that has come into our world. As we look back over the year, we see His hand of blessing and the moving of His Spirit in Paris—the City of Lights.

One example is a recent Q&A night at Genesis, our ministry center here in the heart of our city.

Some of our young French believers have explained that when they were growing up, they were told to not ask questions about God, the Church, or faith. They were just to accept whatever the Church taught.

A Biblical Case for Questions

I explained to these young believers that the Scriptures encourage us to search diligently to know the truth (see Acts 17:11; Hebrews 11:6; 1 Peter 1:10). That’s why we began a monthly Q&A at our Genesis center, where attendees can ask any question about God or faith.

Last month a young woman from India who is studying in Paris attended our Q&A. She had visited our church service and heard the invitation to the Q&A.

She told us that she was from a Hindu family but was exploring what the Bible taught. That evening she opened her life to receive Christ.

What a privilege we have to be in a place where we can connect with people whom God is drawing to Himself.  We say with the apostle Paul, “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15).
