José & Melanie Chinchilla
Church Planters/Team Leadership
Berlin Spanish Team

The vision that God gave us regarding ministry is to begin a multi-cultural church planting movement in Berlin, Germany, beginning with Spanish Speakers.

Upon returning from our first term, we prayed that God would bring Spanish Speakers to faith in Jesus like never seen before. Over the past years, the Spanish economy sent Spanish speakers, from Spain and those who had re-located to Spain from Latin American countries, to Germany to find work and more stability. There are an estimated 30,000 Spanish Speakers in Berlin alone. Starting with just the two of us, we began meeting with three other adults and their combined three children in January 2017 and began the church plant, Vida Abundante of the MAKD (German CMA). In the first year, we saw over 16 people come to faith in Jesus in miraculous ways. We held our first baptismal service later that summer and saw 4 people baptized. From there, we have continued to see people come to Christ and be baptized over the past 4 years. In 2018, we were joined by our teammates, Diego and Ida, who brought stability to a growing church plant and jumped in with discipleship of all of the new believers. We are in the process of training leaders from within the church, a process that has taken some time, as we continue to grow both numerically and in spiritual depth as a church. It is our goal to return from this upcoming home assignment for our 3rd term and to be able to hand over church leadership while beginning another church plant.

It is our desire to see those who God has relocated in Berlin to come to faith in Jesus Christ. We have decided to assume that if we encounter particularly Spanish Speakers, that God has brought them here to meet Him. In the next years, we would love to have planted several more churches and also have a more firmly established church-based seminary in coordination with the German National CMA Church (ABI—Alliance Bible Institute) for the purpose of training and raising up national leadership. One fun fact here is that though we are part of the German CMA, the quickly growing majority is among immigrants in the CMA here (Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish speakers). The MAKD (German CMA) is very international.

José & Melanie met in Costa Rica in 2005. José was finishing up his masters in New Testament Theology at the ESEPA seminary in San José after years of pastoral ministry and a previously acquired Accounting degree. Melanie was in Spanish Language School in Costa Rica with the CMA en route to return to Paraguay as a full time Alliance worker after completing her BA at Toccoa Falls in Georgia and a 2 year apprenticeship with the CMA in Paraguay. They met and were engaged 4 months later. After finishing their time in Costa Rica, Melanie returned to the US and José to Guatemala while they waited on a fiancé visa. They married in NC in 2007. In 2008 they began their ALME service in NE Ohio and then were appointed to Berlin in January 2012. Upon the conclusion of German Language Study, in order to meet the need of a growing Spanish Speaking population in Berlin, they began a Spanish Speaking small group as part of the German Church they were attending. In 2012, and 2014, their sons were born, and in 2019 and 2021 their daughters joined the family. After a year in the US for Home Assignment in 2015-2016, they returned to begin a new church plant in Spanish which is ministering to people from Spain, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Honduras and El Salvador as well as Brasil, Portugal and Angola (who speak Portuguese, German and English). José and Melanie, along with their children, speak Spanish, English and German.

Having hearts for Spanish speakers and the culture, living in Berlin among Germans, they like to say they have the best of all the worlds. Along with their children, God truly has given them the desire of their hearts.

*Their fourth child, a daughter will join the family in May 2021.
