Peter and Laura Marshall: Our Last Newsletter from Uruguay

Dear Family and Friends,

We will be leaving Uruguay for the last time in just over a month. Yes, after 18 wonderful years it is time to say goodbye to a country that we love. It has been a privilege to serve the Lord here alongside our national church colleagues.
You can probably imagine what our days are like. We have been spending time selling our things, looking for packing boxes in dumpsters, burning old unused checks for the mission, and praying for someone who can use all our sermon and class notes, and children’s materials.

These last four years in Salto have been both difficult and rewarding. The first two years we did a lot of waiting for the pastoral transition to begin happening. We did teach a year and a half class on the “Life of Christ in Mathew” during the first two years which was rewarding. But finally, when the pastoral change began to take place in August of 2020, we became much busier. And we are convinced that it is not going to stop until we board the plane in mid-May.

We wanted to mention two of the most rewarding things that have happened in ministry during this past year.
1.) An open door in Montevideo, UY. More than half of the population of Uruguay live in Montevideo. This is a very secular city and evangelical churches can take years to grow. That is why we are excited about a change in pastoral leadership in the one Alliance church in this city. In a conversation with the Uruguay national church president, he asked me (Peter) if there would be a missionary who could pastor this church for 3 years. The current pastor needed to retire, and he had no one to lead the church. We are thankful that one of our missionaries accepted to become the interim pastor. He is also being asked to mentor a new graduate student from our Bible Institute. It brings us joy to know see a healthy working relationship between missionaries and Uruguayan pastors. The potential for this church to grow and impact this city for Christ also is very exciting. Galatians 4:3

2.) As we mentioned above, we waited for more than two years for a pastoral change to take place. But now that we have taken the church through the pastoral transition, we see clearly that this was God's timing for the church. Even though this is pastor Robert’s first ministry experience, we are very encouraged! He is building on the foundation that has been laid. We are convinced that this pastor is tailor made to lead the Salto church into the future. Even though it was difficult to wait, it is so rewarding to know that we did, and that God's timing is perfect! Isaiah 55:8

Please join us in praying for the following:
1) Pray for us as we sell all our things. We have lived in Uruguay for 18 years so there is a lot to sell.
2) Pray for the "goodbyes" and the messages that we will be sharing this next month. That the Lord would anoint each message.
3) Pray for us as we begin to think and pray about tour ministries this coming fall. That the Lord will bless our ministry in each of the churches.
4) Pray for us as we return to the U.S. to live after having been gone for the past 34 years. Pray for our adjustment and for the Lord to continue to lead us according to His plan.
5) Praise the Lord that this year in Uruguay we have the largest number of seminary students ever recorded (37)! Pray for the professors who will be teaching this year at the Bible Institute in Uruguay.
6) Pray for pastor Robert in Salto. That the Lord will give him wisdom and direction in leading the church. And that there would be enough funds received to finish the addition of 2 bedrooms and a bathroom to the pastor’s apartment at the church.

Lastly, we would like to thank all of you for your faithful support over the years. We couldn’t have done it without you! Also, thank you for your faithful giving to our personal ministry bundle and to the Great Commission Fund.
We look forward to connecting with many of you in the coming months. If you would like for us to visit your church, you may contact us directly. We will be available for speaking in the Central District beginning this August.
Thank you,
Peter & Laura Marshall
